Time: 20 minutes
Equipment: planisphere
Purpose/Topic: Navigation—Constellations
AoPG: Intellectual, Social, Physical
Take the Joey Scouts out on a clear night. Gaze at the stars.
Use the planisphere to find familiar constellations.
Start by matching the date and the time on the outside, which will mean the constellations showing in the middle are those that will be visible in the sky.

Time: 5 minutes
Equipment: land and water form three part cards (print out 2 sets, one set kept whole, one cut into three parts.)
Purpose/Topic: Navigation
AoPG: Intellectual
Terms: lake, island, bay, cape, gulf, peninsula, strait, isthmus, system of lakes, archipelago (you may choose to skip the last two)
The objective of these cards is to correctly match the images with both the label, and the definition. To begin with (and for younger Joey Scouts in general), you may choose to use only the label cards.
Each basic card set should include Image cards, Label cards and Combined Image/Label cards (aka Control Card).
Each advanced card set (if you choose to do them) should include Image cards, Label cards, Definition cards and a Control Chart.
Give each pair of Joey Scouts a complete set of cards. They should match up the labels and images, and then refer to the Control cards to see if they are correct.
There is the additional option of using photographic examples of each of the land and water forms, in addition to the generic Images.

Using the lacing cards as a guide, construct each constellation by placing rocks for the stars, and joining them up with the chalk. (Some examples can be found here.)

Time: 10 minutes
Equipment: constellation lacing cards (to be uploaded); thread/yarn
Purpose/Topic: Navigation—Constellations
AoPG: Intellectual, Physical
Print, cut and laminate. Using a hole punch, make a hole in the middle of every star in the constellation. Cut a long string/thread/yarn. Tie a knot in one end and wrap the other with tape, or dip it in glue and let it dry.
Starting at one end of the Constellation, the Joey Scout must thread their yarn through the stars in order.

Equipment: constellation geoboard; ball head straight pins; small rubber bands
Purpose/Topic: Navigation—Constellations

Allow the Joey Scouts to start placing pins in each of the star points. Once pins are in place, weave the small rubber bands between the pins to form lines.

Print and cut out the Rose and labels. Print a control chart for each set type. (I choose to have a copy of just the Cardinal Points, as well as a copy with the Intercardinal Points.)
Laminate if desired.
Joey Scouts can work in pairs, and place the labels at the appropriate positions on the Rose. Check against the control chart.

Time: (I haven’t made one with Joeys yet!)
Equipment: Printed parts (download from here, select one for your location. Another option is here. If you are in Perth, and would like a very simplified version of the wheel [nine constellations seen from here], comment on this post.)
Purpose/Topic: Navigation—Constellations
AoPG: Intellectual, Character
Copy or print the Planisphere parts onto paper or light card. Cut out the Pocket carefully, including the window. Fold the tabs on the pocket carefully.
Insert another sheet of paper (or light card), and tape the tabs down.
Cut out Wheel carefully. Insert into pocket and cut the pocket to shape. Decorate the pocket if desired (careful to avoid the functional parts!)

Time: 20 minutes
Equipment: Cuttlefish; carving tools (eg bobby pins, paperclips, toothpicks); paint; paper
Purpose/Topic: Nautical history and tradition
AoPG: Physical
Show the Joey Scouts some different ways of marking the cuttlefish. Show them how a carved design can take paint and transfer it to paper.
Allow them to carve a design of their own choice on the cuttlefish. (Remind them that the raised areas are what will print on the paper.)
Apply paint to the cuttlefish, and stamp onto the paper.
